Hockey Diversity Alliance co-founder Akim Aliu announced today that production of the 'Black Ice' documentary is set to begin, with him as a co-producer with basketball legend LeBron James and the hit music artist Drake. The documentary will illustrate the influence and cover the history of hockey's most prolific Black players.

Aliu has emerged as a prominent figure in the plight of equality and inclusivity in and around the hockey world. His initial breakthrough in the space came when he blew the whistle on former NHL head coach Bill Peters, who regularly used racist and derogatory language, according to Aliu. It has since become apparent that the culture of the sport, reflective of larger societal issues, is not one of respect for all persons, which has spawned various initiatives with the purpose of education and widespread change in how personnel interact with one another. Simply, the abuse of power at all levels runs rampant, and attention has since shifted to focus on mitigating these issues.

"When exploring a culturally significant and challenging subject like the role of race in hockey, allyship is extremely important," said Vinay Virmani, Chief Content Officer of UNINTERRUPTED Canada. "I can think of no better partner than Scotiabank, who have been corporate trailblazers in the sports diversity and inclusion space, to join us in sharing this important story."

Per the release from Scotiabank, who is financing the the project, the documentary will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Drake, a native of Toronto, has maintained a strong presence with each of the city's sports teams, and his influence in pop culture is as immense. And LeBron James is arguably the most recognizable athlete on Earth. Therefore, their combined presence in and around the sport can only bring more fans, which is great for the growth of the game.
