Lou Lamoriello explains why the Islanders made no big moves this summer

After weeks of silence, New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello came to life on Monday, announcing he signing of three of his players to new contract. Fans are likely happy with the extensions for Noah Dobson, Alex Romanov, and Kieffer Bellows. However, there is still the fact that the Isles signed exactly zero free agents this summer, despite the fact the team was rumoured to be in on some big names such as Johnny Gaudreau and Nazem Kadri. Also, while Romanov was acquired via trade, the islanders made no big moves this summer in an attempt to get better. During a press conference Monday, Lamoriello talked about the absence of adding any free agents or pulling off any big trades.

"Sometimes some of the best transactions you make are the ones you don't make," said Lamoriello.

"I'm really excited about the team we have going into the season right now. I feel very good. If we could've gotten better, we would've done that."

"There's no disappointment where we're at because we feel very good about who we are, or we would have made drastic changes [this off-season]. We're looking forward to getting back at it and maybe proving everybody wrong," he added.

I'm not sure those comments aren't going to sit well with Islanders fans who had to tough it out through a disappointing season in 2022-23 and are now being told the team is good despite the fact that no additions were made through free agency. That said, these lines are classics from Lamoriello and have been stated in different ways before. In the meantime, "Lou" said there are no plans to bring back two members of the roster from last season in Zdeno Chara and Andy Greene. In fact, he told reporters there had been no discussions with either in any way.
