Ryan Dzingel Signs Two-Way Contract with Carolina Hurricanes
Life comes at you fast. One minute you are one win away from the Stanley Cup, and the next you are signing a two-way contract with your NHL career hanging by a thread. That is, if your name is Ryan Dzingel.
The two-time 40-point scorer (both with the Ottawa Senators) saw a real decline in his career after being traded to Columbus. He did find a small degree of success during a stint in Caroline, only to be a complete non-factor the last two seasons. He could hardly crack the Arizona Coyotes' roster & started six games for the San Jose Sharks, managing one assist.
A low-risk bet by Carolina, there is a chance Dzingel can provide some depth scoring as he did in '19-20, when he scored 29 points in 64 games for the Hurricanes. Carolina did add Max Pacioretty & Brent Burns as well this offseason, but should the Canes face injury up front Dzingel could slot in.
Dzingel's underlying statistics are fairly unimpressive. He's solid enough defensively & scores goals at a decent rate per sixty-minutes, but other than that he is a replacement-level player who likely won't be in the NHL much longer. He is 30-years old, and it is uncommon for players to revitalize their careers after the turn from twenties-to-thirties. But it does happen, so who knows.
