Kris Versteeg obviously had a plan when he asked to be released from his contract with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. The 33-year-old forward has immediately signed a contract to play with HK Nitra of the Slovak Extraliga, the same team his brother Mitch has played with since the 2016-17 season. Kris's contract runs through the end of this season.

It was announced over the weekend that Versteeg had asked for his contract with the IceHogs to be terminated, and the team granted his request. He had been serving as captain of the team at the time.

Versteeg played parts of 14 seasons in the NHL with 7 different clubs; Chicago, Toronto, Philadelphia, Florida, Calgary, Carolina and Los Angeles. He won Stanley Cups with Chicago in 2010 and 2015. Through 643 NHL games, Versteeg managed 149 goals and 358 points. Before signing with the IceHogs for this season, Versteeg split last season between Avangard Omsk of the KHL and the Växjö Lakers of the SHL.
