Former Stanley Cup champion Devante Smith-Pelly is continuing his hockey career in the KHL. According to Rsport in Russia, the 27-year-old has signed with Kunlun Red Star, based in Beijing, China.
Smith-Pelly had a professional tryout with Calgary during this season's training camp, but was let go before the start of the regular season. He had spent the previous year with Washington, although he was sent to the AHL for part of it. In 2017-2018, Smith Pelly won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals, and became a fan favourite after scoring seven goals during the championship run, including the tying goal in game five of the Stanley Cup final. That game would be the clincher in Washington's first ever Stanley Cup win.
After being selected by Anaheim in the 2nd round of the 2010 entry draft, Smith-Pelly would go on to play with Montreal and New Jersey before finding his way to Washington. With Kunlun, he joins several other former NHLers including Wojtek Wolski, Gilbert Brule, Adam Cracknell, Ryan Sproul and Griffin Reinhart.
