According to Theo Fleury, Alexander Ovechkin is a big fan, even to the point of attempting to emulate how Fleury dressed on the ice during his career. Washington was in Calgary Tuesday to take on the Flames and practiced at the Saddledome in the morning. Fleury, who lives in the area, decided to check it out, and was surprised with Ovechkin's response.
According to a tweet from Fleury, Ovechkin is a fan, and told him his tinted visor and yellow skate laces were inspired by Fleury wearing them during his NHL career from 1989 to 2003. Fleury also says Ovechkin asked him for an autographed stick, which he provided.
Both Fleury and Ovechkin have one Stanley Cup win over the course of their careers; Fleury with Calgary in 1989 and Ovechkin in 2018 with the Capitals. Fleury, now 51, finished his NHL career with 1088 points in 1084 games.
The Caps beat the Flames 5-3. Ovechkin had a goal and an assist.
