Former NHLer Kris Versteeg believes poor officiating is holding back the league's stars

If there's one thing most hockey fans are able to agree on, it's that officiating in the NHL is bad. Rarely a night goes by where fans aren't complaining about a blatant miscall, a goal that should have been called back, or something along those lines, which seems to greatly impact the flow of the game. For two-time Stanley Cup champion Kris Versteeg, who now serves as an analyst with Sportsnet, he believes the officiating is holding back the NHL's top stars from really putting on a show.

"Can you imagine if they called the game right?," said Versteeg while discussing the on-ice treatment of Edmonton's Connor McDavid. "Our superstars will never be able to be superstars until they call the game right. This garbage can't happen."

"These guys are supposed to put on a show every night," added Versteeg. "If our league isn't giving ou superstars the ability to do this each and every single night, then why?"

Versteeg went on to say that the league needs to start calling the game right and "protecting superstars."

"This guy is the best player we've seen since Gretzky," said Versteeg, referring to McDavid.

"Take care of him."

It's not really surprising that players like McDavid, Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, and others would be favourite targets for their opponents. They are trying to stop them from taking over games with their skills. I get Versteeg's point, but I feel all players should be treated equally, regardless of status. A penalty should be a penalty, no matter who the victim might be.
