The Rangers Brendan Lemieux and Trent Frederic of the Bruins, both well-known pests, got things started early by jaw-jacking each other during warm-ups. Near the end of the second period, Lemieux would catch Frederic with a hit from behind while Frederic was trying to get off for a line change. Lemieux was given two for boarding. Frederic would actually head down the tunnel to get checked out following the hit but came back for the third period.
Lemieux and Frederic continued their antics and both were eventually tossed from the game with just over a minute left in the third. There was nothing big that led to them getting kicked out. It appears the refs were just sick of dealing with them.
Meanwhile, around five minutes into the second period, Phillip Di Giuseppe of the Rangers was clearly upset by a play involving the Bruins' Sean Kuraly. It turns out Kuraly gave him a very blatant slewfoot in front of the Boston net. There was no call on the play.
As a side note, Keith Kinkaid of New York got his first win since October 31, 2019 and his first shutout since November 15, 2018.
