Gary Bettman comments on the likelihood of helmet ads in future seasons
Heading into the 2020-21 season, the NHL needed to make some money after losing plenty of revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the areas they felt could help for this season was adding helmet ads and virtual slot signage, something that had not been seen prior in the NHL.
By all accounts this has worked, and speaking with media on Thursday Bettman made it sound like the league has no plans to change this. The longtime commissioner said «it's more likely than not» that both helmet ads and virtual slot signage will continue going forward. While some fans aren't a huge fan of the advertisements, they aren't overly noticeable and are certainly better than jersey ads like you see in many leagues in Europe.
One potential area this could help with the NHL is the salary cap. With the current situation of the league due to the pandemic, Bettman predicted recently that the salary cap would remain flat for the next four years. This would be devastating for teams near the cap limit who have pending free agents not only this season but the following three. Perhaps if they are able to continue generating money off of these new advertisements it will help speed up the process of the salary cap beginning to increase once again.
