Habs' Ben Chiarot spotted leaving Calgary with obvious sign of injury

It was clear Montreal Canadiens defenceman Ben Chiarot was injured during his first period fight against J.T. Miller of the Vancouver Canucks last night, but just how bad was being kept under wraps. The Canadiens did say Chiarot was being sent back to Montreal for further assessment while the team continued it's western road trip. Now, it appears Chiarot definitely has something broken.

Marc-André Perreault of TVA Sports has Tweeted that he saw Chiarot at Calgary airport Thursday and the blueliner has a cast on his hand. There was tons of speculation that Chiarot had broken either a finger or hand during the fight, but no official confirmation.

That likely means Chiarot will need four-to-six weeks to heal, although everything depends on the evaluation once he gets back to Montreal.

Chiarot's fight against Miller came with just five minutes left in the first period and the score tied at 0. It did not last long and not many pucnhes were thrown.

Chiarot has spent the entire 2020-21 season playing on the Habs' top pairing with Shea Weber. He has averaged over 21 minutes of ice-time per game this season, which won't be easy to replace for the Canadiens. With the injury, Victor Mete will draw back into the lineup, although it's not clear whether he would be paired with Weber. Mete has played in just five games for Montreal this season, spending the rest of his time as a healthy scratch.
