Snow, 39, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in June of 2019. When he was first diagnosed, he was given just one year to live. Since then, he has continued in his role with the Flames, despite slowly losing some of his muscle function.
“All indications are that it went really well,” said Flames general manager Brad Treliving in an interview with TSN on Monday. “The good news is that the procedure is done, he's come through it well, and he's in great spirits, so all things are looking good right now.”
Treliving went to visit Snow at his home in Calgary this past weekend prior to Snow leaving for the hospital. Since the surgery, Treliving has exchanged texts with Snow's wife, Kelsie, along with one of his surgeons.
“They said that he came through this as good or better as anyone they've ever seen,” Treliving said.
Snow first joined the Flames in 2011 as the club's director of hockey analysis following a four-year tenure with the Minnesota Wild where he served as their director of hockey operations. Before getting into a hockey management career, Snow was a journalist who covered both the NHL and MLB for the Boston Globe and Minneapolis Star Tribune.
According to Kelsie, Snow had the surgery on Monday due to having trouble eating throughout the summer, a symptom common of ALS. By all accounts, the surgery went successfully and Snow is expected to be discharged from the hospital in the next couple of days.
