Longtime agent with Newport Sports Managememt calls it a career, moves to auto industry
Long time player agent Mark Guy is making hockey headlines this week following the announcement that he intents to move on from his career as an agent in favor of entering the automobile industry after more than 20 with Newport Sports Management.
Guy is a heavy-hitter in the industry, representing marquee names like Alex Pietrangelo (VGK) , Steven Stamkos (TB), Tom Wilson (WSH), P.K. Subban (NJ), Bo Horvat (VAN), Travis Konecny (PHI) and both Ryan (NYR) and Dylan Strome (CHI).
Per PuckPedia, Guy has a lofty 23 active contracts totalling $69M against the cap. He also sits at #7 on PuckPedia's Agent Leader-Board with over $360M in total contract dollars.
Guy's main reasons for the change of scenery, so to speak, were a desire to remain closer to his family, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As an agent, Guy lived a lot of his life on the road and living out of hotel rooms - a novelty that he admittedly enjoyed at times, but also a lifestyle that is not sustainable for a family man. Basically, this change is all about "quality of life", as Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman stated on the 31 Thoughts podcast.
