Former WJC gold medalist and Stars prospect retires at 24
He may be young, but 24-year-old goaltender Colton Point has decided to retire from hockey. Point, a draft pick of the Dallas Stars and a gold medal winner at the World Junior Hockey Championship in 2018, has suffered from concussion issues over the past couple of years.
Point, of North Bay, Ontario, served as a backup goaltender to Carter Hart during Team Canada's run to the gold medal at the 2018 World Juniors. He played in one game of the tournament, and stopped every shot he faced in a 6-0 shutout over Team Slovakia.
Point signed a three-year entry level deal with the Dallas Stars after being drafted in the fifth round in 2016. He would spend most of those three years in the AHL and ECHL. The Stars chose not to renew his contract when it ran out, making him a free agent. He signed a deal with the Fort Wayne Comets of the ECHL at the beginning of the 2022-23 season. After 11 games, and just two wins, he decided to retire.
Point has duel citizenship and had the choice to represent either Team Canada or Team USA in international competitions. Canada was always his choice.
