Seattle set to release more details on the team

After a few delays, it looks like the NHL's newest franchise, Seattle, is about the finally give fans an announcement on the team's nickname and, possibly, the logo. After months of silence on the issue, the team released a video on Twitter with the statement "07.23.2020 - 9:00am PT, The 32nd franchise comes to life." Check it out:

9 am Pacific Time is 12 noon Eastern, by the way. While the tweet does not specifically mention the release of the name, there's little else left for the team to announce. We already know the team is starting play at the beginning of the 2021-22 season. The team will play in the Climate Pledge Arena, after selling the naming rights of the former KeyArena and Seattle Center Coliseum to Amazon founder, CEO and President Jeff Bezos. We also know that Hockey Hall-of-Famer Ron Francis will serve as the franchise's first general manager.

The most popular theory has the team taking the name Seattle Kraken, which would most definitely fit in with the water-based theme of the video. Kraken is a legendary octopus-like sea monster of gigantic size in Scandinavian and Greek folklore. At the same time, it's worth noting the city is surrounded by Puget Sound, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean, as well as Lake Washington. Seattle is known for its sea-faring beginnings, so a video which includes this type of theme may not really be revealing anything. Another key rumour regarding the name would be the Seattle Sockeye or Sockeyes, after the salmon which are common in the region.

There are, of course, several other theories regarding Seattle's possible name. We'll be able to see which one wins out on Thursday.
