Andrew Hammond announces his retirement
After starting his pro hockey career in 2013, goaltender Andrew Hammond is hanging up his skates. In a lengthy statement on Twitter, Hammond said an injury suffered during his short time in Montreal during the 2021-22 season is not healing the way he'd like it to, and it's time to retire. Here's his full statement:
Despite only playing 67 regular season games in the NHL, Hammond was a well-known and well-liked player, affectionately known as "The Hamburgler." He was the first goalie in NHL history to earn 21 wins in their first 27 games, and was the first goalie with the Ottawa Senators to win their first five starts with the team.
Hammond signed a one-year contract with Traktor Chelyabinsk at the beginning of the 2022-23 season, but would play just two games with the team before heading back to North America.
