With the Montreal Canadiens and Anaheim Ducks out of the playoff picture in their respective conferences, they could look to sell off certain assets leading up to the trade deadline on March 3rd.
According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the Edmonton Oilers have internally discussed the possibility of trying to acquire Canadiens defenceman Joel Edmundson or Ducks defenceman John Klingberg.
"I know they had discussed internally the merits for example of both John Klingberg and Joel Edmundson, as part of their long list of D that they're looking at. Totally different players, of course, now John Klingberg, who has struggled this year with the Anaheim Ducks. He signed a one-year deal with the Ducks, specifically knowing he'd be flipped more than likely before the March 3 deadline. He's got a full no-trade clause right now. But on January 1, that switched to a modified no-trade where there's 10 teams where he can be traded to. And he's obviously an offensive quarterback-type defenceman." LeBrun said on Thursday's edition of Insider Trading on TSN.
He added, "Totally different with Joel Edmundson, obviously, a shutdown-type defenceman; leadership guy, Stanley Cup pedigree. The Habs [Montreal Canadiens] aren't looking to move him by the way. But they're obviously, where they are in their retooling, willing to listen to most of their veterans."
As mentioned, Klingberg is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st and is more likely to me moved than Edmundson is, but both are intriguing options for Oilers general manager Ken Holland.
Prior to Thursday's head-to-head battle, Edmundson had three points in 19 games, while Klingberg has put up eight points in 23 games.
Of those two the Oilers have discussed, who would you rather see them acquire? Let us know your thoughts in the poll below!
