A little over a week ago, Edmonton Oilers forward Jesse Puljujarvi mentioned in an interview with a Finnish media outlet that he isn't sure if he belongs in the NHL anymore.
Since that interview came out and even before, many wondered what Puljujarvi's future in Edmonton would look like and it appears that the two sides will be nearing a split either leading up to the trade deadline in early March or after the 2022-23 season.
Yesterday, it was revealed that the Anaheim Ducks are interested in acquiring the 24-year-old forward and according to Elliotte Friedman in his recent '32 Thoughts' article, the Carolina Hurricanes and Detroit Red Wings have also shown interest, but it doesn't appear that anything is imminent.
"I do think this will be Jesse Puljujarvi's last season in Edmonton with everyone recognizing it is time for a fresh start the question is when it happens. At times, I've heard Anaheim, Carolina and Detroit have at least looked at it, but I don't think anything's ever been close to what the Oilers would consider." Friedman said.
He added, "Right now, battling with injuries and for the playoffs, they don't want to be shorthanded. But, when they get healthy, they'll look at trade options or possibly even waivers. If it goes to the summer, I'd imagine Edmonton doesn't qualify him and he signs elsewhere. Hope he finds inner peace well before then."
Puljujarvi is set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the 2022-23 season, so as Elliotte Friedman mentioned, there's a chance the Oilers won't issue him a qualifying offer if the situation drags out until next summer.
While there would certainly be interest in him as an unrestricted free agent if he's not qualified by the Oilers, it's also not inconceivable to see Puljujarvi return home to Finland either.
