Pro hockey player hailed as hero after risking life to save children from burning building
A professional hockey player from Norway is being called a hero by authorities after saving people, including children, from a burning building that included children. Tommy Kristiansen, who has played almost his entire career in Norway expect for short stints in Sweden and Germany, was out walking his dog on Sunday when he saw a building that contained four apartments engulfed in flames. Kristiansen said he knew he had to do something.
"I ran into the common entrance. I knew there were children living there, so I got them out first. I quickly emptied a fire extinguisher, then I saw the flames coming out of the kitchen," he told reporters after the incident.
After emptying that extinguisher, Kristiansen ran to his own home four houses away to get another one. He used it do douse more flames before firefighters arrived at the scene. 11 people were evacuated from the building in total.
"The man has done a very good job and has prevented the fire from getting even worse," police said of Kristiansen's efforts.
The 33-year-old was taken by ambulance to hospital to ensure he wasn't suffering from smoke inhalation or anything like that. He's fine and glad he could help.
"I was in the right place at the right time," said Kristiansen. "If I had arrived two minutes later, I think the whole building would have gone down."
