Gerard Gallant is a well-known and, by most accounts, well-liked NHL coach. As popular as he may be in the NHL, he's an absolute legend in his home province of Price Edward Island, especially in his hometown of Summerside. As such, "Turk", as he's known to just about everyone, was given a special honour Tuesday in the town he grew up in.
"An honor for PEI's own. Today, in Turk's home city of Summerside, [Credit Union Place] unveiled the Gerard 'Turk' Gallant Arena - a place where kids will learn to skate, will make lifelong friendships and, given its namesake, will always be reminded to dream big." New York Rangers, Twitter
Gallant grew up near the local rink in PEI and could often be found sweeping the place with his buddies to get ice time. As for the nickname, Gallant had said this previously:
"I've been called 'Turk' since I was four years old. I don't remember how I got the nickname. The only thing I can remember is my uncle used to raise turkeys, and he had them in our basement. He raised them. I used to go down there as a little kid, I guess, and chase them around there. One of my brothers called me 'turkey' and it got shortened to 'Turk.'"
Gallant seemed right at home while attending the ceremony Tuesday. He is certainly a people person, although he sometimes has little patience for reporters. Congratulations to him and his hometown of Summerside!
