Batherson completes incredible quarter-final comeback for Canada at the 2022 World Championship

Quarter-finals Thursday at the 2022 IIHF World Championship started with a bang in Tampere as the second-place team in Group B, Sweden, took on the third-place team in Group A, Canada.

The Swedes got the scoring started 1:27 into the first period through Carl Klingberg. Less than six minutes later, Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander put Sweden up 2-0.

Just over eight minutes into the second period, former Anaheim Duck Max Friberg extended Sweden's lead to 3-0 and it looked like they were on their way to a semi-final appearance. But Canada turned up the pressure and Friberg's goal ended up being Sweden's only shot of the second period as they were outshot 19-1.

Canada carried that pressure into the third period and 1:21 in, Ryan Graves scored to bring his nation within two.

Flash forward to later in the period, with less than two minutes remaining and on the powerplay, Pierre-Luc Dubois ripped one past Linus Ullmark to cut Sweden's lead to one.

Thirty seconds later with the extra attacker, the birthday boy, Mat Barzal, threw the puck on net and it squeaked through Ullmark to tie the game at 3-3.

The game then headed to overtime and twenty-five seconds in, William Nylander was called for tripping, so Canada headed to the 4-on-3 powerplay. It didn't take long for them to capitalize, as eighteen seconds later Ottawa Senators forward Drake Batherson scored to send Canada to the semi-final for the seventh straight year.
