Nicolas Roy, a young Canadian center, was selected 96th overall in the 2015 entry draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. He made his NHL debut on April 7, 2018 in the last game of the Hurricanes season.

On June 26, 2019, Roy was traded by the Hurricanes, along with a conditional 2021 fifth-round pick, to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Erik Haula. He would spend the beginning of the 19-20 season in the AHL.

The young center was called up to start as the fourth line center for the Golden Knights for the first time on Sunday, as they hosted the Anaheim Ducks.

With less than five minutes left in the first period, Roy would walk in on two Anaheim defenders and Veteran goaltender John Gibson, beating him five-hole to net his first NHL goal in his debut with the VGK. He would extend the Vegas lead to 3–1.

The Golden Knights would go on to win 5-2, allowing Anaheim only 15 shots on goal through the game, the fewest shots allowed in the team's history.
