Alexander Gulyavtsev, the head coach of KHL team Amur Khabarovsk, was fined by the league today in the amount of 300,000 rubles ($4707 USD) for his abuse and threats towards official Viktor Gashilov.
In the incident, Gulyavtsev was seen and heard yelling at Gashilov that he will "burn down his car in [their shared hometown] Perm. Gulyavtsev attempted to explain himself after, saying that he has known Gashilov for a long time, and though emotionally charged, the comment was a joke.
His words were supported today by Sport Express writer Aleksey Shevchenko, who also happens to be from Perm. "Only fools would accept that Gulyavtsev would threaten to burn Gashilov's car seriously," wrote Shevchenko. "They're from the same town, Perm, and that is how we joke there, it's completely normal. Plus, you have to know nothing about hockey to imagine that Gulyavtsev would seek revenge on anyone. [He's the type of guy] who'd give the shirt off his back to someone in need."
Shevchenko acknowledged however, that a public figure like Gulyavtsev should know better and the fine will serve to remind him of that.
