A match in the top Polish league (Polska Hokej Liga) was cancelled after a player from the visiting team was assaulted before the match somewhere within the stadium, off the ice.

After 28-year-old Finnish-born Jaakko Turtiainen was taken to the hospital, his teammates from GKS Katowice refused to play. The hosts, JKH GKS Jastrzębie, agreed to cancel the game, perhaps to be made up at a later date.

Both teams issued statements condemning the perpetrators, with the statement from Jastrzębie going as far as to refer to the assailants, who have not been apprehended, as "troglodytes." Home fans have been told that their already purchased tickets can be used at the team's next home game.
