Danish goaltender Jon Lee-Olsen has become the first male professional hockey player to be "out of the closet", as he has openly declared his homosexuality. Lee-Olsen, 27, is currently playing in Denmark with the Rungsted Seier Capital club. He decided to announce his sexuality before the start of the season.
While other hockey players have announced their sexuality after retiring, Lee-Olsen becomes the first to make the declaration while still playing. As a result of the announcement, DIU [Danish Ice Hockey Union] has in turn come out with six action points that clubs and referees in Danish hockey should use during matches if homophobic calls arise. Among other things, the match should be interrupted as soon as the judges hear homophobic calls followed by a warning to the audience. Should the slurs continue, the stands may be emptied of spectators.
Peter Regin, captain of the Danish National Team, had nothing but praise for Lee-Olsen.
"It is very strong and courageous for Jon to jump out as a gay ice hockey player. It is amazing that he does and hopefully in the name of diversity he can be an inspiration to others. Not just ice hockey players, but for athletes in general. We are living in 2019, and there must be room for everyone - without prejudice. On behalf of the national team, I can only send a huge pat on the back of Jon."
