Connor Hellebuyck just handed Scott Arniel and the Winnipeg Jets a brutal trade puzzle before camp.
Darren Dreger dropped the detail that makes this saga far messier: Hellebuyck's expanded destination list reportedly contains American teams and zero Canadian clubs.
That matters because Winnipeg isn't shopping a depth piece. The Jets are trying to move an $8,500,000 goaltender whose cap hit ranks 4th at his position.
And the market isn't wide open. Dreger noted that many of those American clubs already have established goaltending, which can turn an expanded list into a much smaller list in practice.
The sting for Winnipeg is obvious. Hellebuyck asked out, yet the destinations he will consider appear to exclude every Canadian landing spot before Kevin Cheveldayoff can even start building leverage.

Winnipeg went 35-35-12 last season, finished with 82 points and carried a -29 goal differential. This isn't a team that can afford to lose value in the biggest move of its offseason.
Dreger's update puts Winnipeg in a trade squeeze
Now the Jets face the ugliest version of a star trade: everyone knows the player wants out, the player controls the map, and interested clubs can see the same bottleneck.
That's where Dreger's update hits hardest. Removing every Canadian option tells the American clubs still alive in the process that Winnipeg may have fewer alternatives than it wants.
And those clubs don't have to rush. If their crease is already settled, Winnipeg has to convince them that Hellebuyck is worth reshaping both their roster and cap structure.
Scott Arniel now enters camp with the franchise goalie still attached to the roster and the trade noise sitting directly over the locker room. That's exactly the distraction teams spend all summer trying to avoid.
Cheveldayoff's problem is even colder. He can't move Hellebuyck simply to end the story, because a weak return would leave Winnipeg thinner after a disappointing season.
The expanded list sounds like progress until the fine print lands. Zero Canadian teams, established American starters, an $8,500,000 cap hit and a player who has asked out doesn't create a clean market.
It's a squeeze. Unless one American club decides Hellebuyck is worth rearranging its crease for, Winnipeg could carry hockey's messiest unresolved trade story straight through camp.
