Tensions raise at Predators training camp as Oasiz Wiesblatt injures teammate with bone-crushing hit

Oasiz Wiesblatt gave Andrew Brunette an immediate camp issue Thursday after a heavy hit forced Vitali Pinchuk out of the drill.

This wasn't incidental contact along the boards. Wiesblatt stepped into Pinchuk during the opening day of Predators camp and delivered the kind of collision players normally expect once the games begin.

Pinchuk went down hard, left the drill and later headed back toward the locker room. That changed the tone of the session in a hurry.

For Wiesblatt, the sequence showed exactly how thin the line can be between competing for an NHL job and putting a teammate in a difficult spot.

Training camp is supposed to be competitive. Players fighting for roster position can't coast through drills, especially when every shift is being watched by the coaching staff.

But this one had some extra bite. Wiesblatt appeared committed to finishing the contact rather than simply leaning into Pinchuk and moving on.

Pinchuk was caught with his attention elsewhere as Wiesblatt closed the space and drove through him, leaving him on the ice before he exited the drill.

That's also the NHL lesson buried inside an uncomfortable practice moment: awareness matters everywhere. A player can't assume he's protected simply because the sweater coming toward him belongs to a teammate.

Wiesblatt is trying to make an impression, and there's no mystery about what that kind of shift tells a coaching staff. He came to camp ready to play with pace and edge.

The concern is the consequence for Pinchuk. Leaving a drill and returning to the locker room is never how a player wants his first day of camp to unfold.

Brunette now has to manage both sides of it. He wants intensity from players trying to force their way into the lineup, but losing someone during an internal drill is a different issue altogether.

For Pinchuk, the next update matters more than the collision itself. Camp opportunities disappear quickly when a player is unavailable, especially with roster competition already underway.

And for everyone else on the ice, the message arrived on Day 1: keep your head up. Even in September, an NHL camp can turn serious in one stride.
