Matt Poitras is staying with the Boston Bruins, giving head coach Marco Sturm another young forward to evaluate when training camp opens.
Boston signed Poitras to a one-year contract for the 2026-27 season carrying an NHL cap hit of $850,000. The deal puts his immediate future back in his own hands.
Poitras hit the ice for the first day of training camp Thursday with a clear objective. He wants to earn an NHL roster spot and establish himself as a player Sturm can use every night.
That opportunity hasn't always been available. Poitras made Boston's roster as a 19-year-old in 2023 after forcing his way into the conversation with a strong preseason.
His rookie season produced 5 goals and 15 points in 33 games before a shoulder injury eventually required surgery and ended his year early.
The Bruins have since taken a more patient route with his development, moving Poitras between Boston and Providence while giving him significant AHL minutes.

During the 2024-25 season, Poitras recorded 20 points in 23 games with Providence after being assigned to the AHL. He later earned another call-up to Boston.
His path remained similar last season. Poitras opened 2025-26 with Providence and appeared in 3 games for Boston, including the Stadium Series.
He spent most of the year in the AHL and finished with 44 points in 60 regular-season games. That production keeps him firmly in Boston's roster discussion entering camp.
The extension doesn't guarantee him a spot. It gives the Bruins another inexpensive option at forward while giving Poitras a chance to show his development is ready to translate into a larger NHL role.
That matters after Boston made changes to its forward group during the offseason. There are minutes available, but Poitras still has to separate himself from the other forwards competing for work.
For Sturm, camp now becomes the next evaluation point. Poitras has already shown he can produce in Providence, and the question shifts toward whether he can earn consistent deployment in Boston's bottom six.
At $850,000, the contract carries limited risk for the Bruins. For Poitras, the stakes are much larger: this season represents another chance to turn AHL production into a permanent NHL job.
