Ryan Johansen officially files grievance against the Philadelphia Flyers for wrongful contract termination

Ryan Johansen was terminated by the Philadelphia Flyers this off-season in a strange situation, and now he has officially filed a grievance with the team.

At the 2024 NHL trade deadline, the Philadelphia Flyers acquired Ryan Johansen from the Colorado Avalanche, but upon arrival, the veteran forward revealed that he had an injury and would not report to the team. Given that this was not disclosed, the Flyers waived Johansen for the purposes of contract termination for a contract breach, and now, the situation has evolved.

Johansen's team were not thrilled with the way the situation was handled by Danny Briere and the Flyers, and now, they've officially filed a grievance with the team for the way it was handled.

The news was first broken by Insider Frank Seravalli, and while the league allowed the Flyers to terminate Johansen's contract, it became clear that would not be the end of the story.

It's unclear how much of a claim that Johansen has, but given the way the situation was handled all the way around, it's safe to say that they believe they can win the case with the Philadelphia Flyers. From the moment that the Flyers acquired Johansen, a 900-game veteran in the league, they believed reuniting him with John Tortorella would be a good move for his career, but ultimately it has been a mess since then.

With Johansen's representation having clear proof of an injury and surgery, they believe the way the Flyers handled the situation was wrong, and now, with the NHLPA involved, we will wait and see how this all plays out.
