Washington Capitals host John Walton has made the heartbreaking announcement to fans around the league that he's just been diagnosed with colon cancer.

John Walton, the longtime radio announcer for the Washington Capitals and former voice of the Hershey Bears, shared some personal news on Tuesday: he's been diagnosed with colon cancer.

Walton posted a message on social media to let everyone know what's going on and what he's facing in the months ahead.

He mentioned that he's scheduled for surgery on Wednesday to remove the cancer. The good news is that his doctors are optimistic about his recovery. Walton is staying positive and plans to be at the Capitals Training Camp in September, ready to call the team's first preseason game against the Philadelphia Flyers on September 22nd.

"I will be in a fight for a bit, but it's a fight I'm going to win," Walton writes. "I am so incredibly thankful for my hockey and MSE family who have been so supportive of me through this time, and I won't be down for long."

John Walton has been the main radio voice for the Capitals since 2011, after spending nine years with the Hershey Bears in the AHL. He's also done some national TV work, including covering Stanley Cup playoff games and women's hockey at the 2018 Winter Olympics for NBC Sports.

After Walton shared his diagnosis, the Capitals' PR team, the team's official social media account, and even team owner Ted Leonsis sent him their best wishes.

"Wishing you strength and healing - know that you're surrounded by love and positive thoughts,» Capitals PR tweeted. «We are here to support you every step of the way."

"We are all with you, John! ❤️," @Capitals added.

"John - your #ALLCAPS family is standing with you in this fight," Leonsis wrote. "We @MSE and the @Capitals will be with you every step of the way. Wishing you a swift recovery and can't wait to see you back in the booth soon."

Walton ended his message by encouraging everyone over 45 to get checked for colon cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends that people at average risk start regular screenings at age 45 and continue through age 75.

All of us are rooting for John and can't wait to hear his voice calling Capitals games for many more seasons to come.
