First, I want to preface this by stating what we all know: Alexis Lafrenière is good at hockey. Like, really good. Lafrenière, who will take part in the 2020 World Junior Hockey Championships in the Czech Republic later this month, is enjoying an absolutely astonishing 2019-20 campaign with Rimouski Oceanic.
Last season with Rimouski, the Saint-Eustache, PQ native recorded 37 goals and 105 points in just 61 games. Firmly positioned as the consensus No.1 pick in the 2020 NHL draft, Lafrenière is on pace to annihilate his totals from 2018-19.
Through just 32 games this season, the 18-year-old has found the back of the net 24 times, adding 46 helpers, for a total of 70 points. That puts him on pace to record over 140 points this season. To put it into perspective, Lafrenière is on pace to finish his QMJHL career with 325 points, which would move him ahead of Sidney Crosby for 2nd on Rimouski's all-time scoring leaders list, albeit with more games played than #87. For those who are curious, Brad Richards is number one on the list with 432 points in 190 games.
If the dominant young forward is able to maintain his current pace, he will become the first Oceanic player since Crosby (2004-05) to eclipse the 120 point mark in a single season. Lafrenière's 70 points is tops in QMJHL scoring, putting him 11 points ahead of second place Cédric Paré (59).
TSN graphic shows 24g + 42a = 70, which is a mathematical error.. Lafreniere has 24g + 46a = 70.
