Former Oiler Anton Slepyshev apologizes to teammates after headbutting opponent at Olympics

Anton Slepyshev, who played just over 100 games in the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers, was the hero of the ROC's first men's hockey game at the Olympics. Slepyshev scored the only goal of the game with 2.7 seconds left in the first period as the Russians beat Switzerland 1-0. However, Slepyshev was also a villain of sorts after receiving a double minor for headbutting fellow former NHLer Yannick Weber in the third period. He received a double minor on the play.

Following the game, Slepyshev told Russian media he apologized to his teammates.

"I don't want to talk about the penalty, how it all happened. I hope this situation will be an example for me and the whole team," said Slepyshev. "That's no way to act. In the locker room, none of my teammates said anything, but I apologized to them and thanked them for the quality play on the penalty kill. They are great," Slepyshev told reporters.

It's a bit surprising that he didn't receive more than a double minor given how strict International tournaments can be with rules. The ROC's next game is Friday against Denmark. Slepyshev was a third round draft pick of the Oilers in 2013.
