When discussing his first concussion he suffered, Shaw said, "Torey Krug, blindside open ice elbow to the head. No penalty, no suspension. The NHL blamed it on me for putting myself in that position. But watch the video, it's an elbow to my head, I had jersey burn from my ear across my entire face from his elbow just crushing me. That was two months of, I couldn't look, you know I was in Montreal, it's bright snow everywhere. So every time I went outside, I had to wear sunglasses, I had headaches. I've always said, if that was me throwing that hit, there's no problem the league throws me out for ten games. No problem."
Shaw also mentioned that while he was a member of the Montreal Canadiens, George Parros visited the team to do his annual player safety meeting and said that the pair got into a heated exchange.
"So I got into a heated argument with George Parros the next year. He came to do his meeting with every team and we were in Pittsburgh, I think it was pre-game skate and he starts talking to us. I wanted to fight him right there, he was being a complete as*hole. He was giving [Phil] Danault sh*t about something that happened in a pre-season game and Danault didn't like it, so Danault said something like, 'well, I only acted that way because he did this to me' and then he said something to Danault, I can't remember what. So then I stood up and said 'you gonna blame Phil for putting himself in that position like you did me?' Then he got all heated and started lipping back at me, I can't remember what words were exchanged, but he ended up just ending the meeting right there, he didn't finish the meeting," Shaw said.
Last April, at the age of 29, Shaw was forced to retire from professional hockey due to concussion issues after doctors highly recommended to him that it was time to end his playing career.
