The former co-host of Coach's Corner on Hockey Night in Canada says he needs some time to think before he gives any further response since apologizing on air last weekend. Ron MacLean stood by as Don Cherry made his recent comments on Coach's Corner regarding immigrants and poppies. At that time, he made no response. The next day, he apologized on air, saying he should have said something, while calling Cherry's rant "offensive", "hurtful" and "flat-out wrong."
CBC caught up with MacLean last night where he made his first public comments since Cherry was fired from Hockey Night in Canada after close to 40 years.
"I don't mean to run away, or skulk away, or evade," said Maclean. "But I have to have these days to make sure I'm right in what I say this weekend, to think about all that's going on, and process it. And that's where I'm at. I'll leave it at that."
MacLean ended the interview by saying you will see us on Saturday. By us, it is assumed he means the rest of the cast of Hockey Night in Canada, as Cherry has been officially removed from the show.
For his part, Cherry has said he was very disappointed in MacLean's apology, adding that while he still considers him a friend, he feels Maclean "buried" him.
