Dan Carcillo, who has been very outspoken about concussions and brain injuries in hockey, is not happy with Don Cherry's assessment of the Scott Sabourin incident. After Sabourin was stretchered off the ice Saturday night following an ugly collision with Boston's David Backes, Cherry took to Coach's Corner and said “He just got knocked out,no big deal." These comments enraged Carcillo, who established the 'Chapter 5 Foundation' after his retirement from the NHL, which is dedicated to helping players who are struggling with post-concussion syndrome, anxiety, or depression.

"When will [Hockey Night in Canada] get their act together and get rid of [Don Cherry]," Carcillo posted to Twitter. "It's bad enough that he subconsciously tells kids to “listen up” before describing a big fight or hit in his Rock Em Sock Em videos, but his comments about brain injuries are as outdated as his suits."

While Sabourin was conscious and moving his arms and legs after the incident Saturday night, it seemed clear that he was out before he hit the ice after knocking helmets with Backes during the game between Ottawa and Boston. The way he fell head-first to the ice likely didn't help the situation. Concussions are tricky. Some recover relatively quickly from them. Others feel the lasting effects for years.

Carcillo is the first to admit that his style of play during his 11 seasons in the NHL was reckless, and that his actions put others and himself in danger. He has since been outspoken of the NHL's refusal to acknowledge the lasting impacts of brain injuries on players.

"There are no rules that prevent NHL teams from bringing on neurologists to help with proper diagnosis and care of traumatic brain injuries. We should pray that Scott Sabourin gets the proper care he deserves," he wrote on Twitter shortly after the scary incident in Boston Saturday night.
