Andrew MacDonald's professional tryout with the Calgary Flames has come to an end. The team has let the veteran blueliner go without signing him to a new contract. MacDonald returns to being an unrestricted free agent.
Originally drafted by the New York Islanders, the 33-year-old is probably best known for his time with the Philadelphia Flyers, although it was certainly a rocky relationship. The Flyers signed MacDonald to a six-year, $30 million contract extension in April of 2014. In October of 2015, the Flyers put him on waivers and he was assigned to Philadelphia's AHL affiliate team, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Prior to the start of the 2017–18 season, the Flyers named MacDonald an alternate captain. During the 2018–19 season, MacDonald appeared in 47 games, producing just 9 assists. In June of this year, the club placed him on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. The move allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
Over 586 games, MacDonald has 28 goals and 161 points.
