John Buccigross just laid out what he calls the right Nikita Kucherov trade, and it sends a Stars winger to Tampa Bay.

The idea is Kucherov to Dallas for Jason Robertson. It is a hypothetical, nothing more, and no team has reported talks on this swap.

The Kucherov chatter hasn't slowed down this week. Pierre LeBrun's Vegas Golden Knights mention came first, and Buccigross is now putting a name on the return.

Buccigross said he believes Robertson would extend with the Lightning and that the number would be cheaper than what Kucherov would command, floating 13 to 13.5 as a rough figure.

The extension part is the whole point of the pitch. Robertson is on an expiring deal that carries a $12,000,000 cap hit and ends at UFA, so the Lightning would be acquiring a player who needs a new contract right away.

Kucherov's deal is in the same spot. His $9,500,000 cap hit runs through 2026-27 and he is a UFA at expiry, with no extension signed.

Why Robertson makes sense for Tampa Bay

The production is there. Robertson has 14 points in 14 games this season, with five goals and two game-winners, and he is 27 years old.

Kucherov is 33 and still producing at a high level, with 18 points in 13 games. That is the cost of any swap: Tampa Bay would be moving a franchise icon with 1141 career points for a younger winger.

From the Lightning side, the timing is awkward. They are 8-3-2, sit 4th in the Atlantic Division and are unbeaten at home at 6-0-0. This is not a team in obvious need of a teardown.

Dallas has to see it differently. Giving up a 27-year-old scoring winger for a 33-year-old on an expiring deal is a hard sell, unless the Stars are convinced Kucherov re-signs. Nothing in the pitch says he would.

My view: this is a bad trade for Tampa Bay. Moving the best player in franchise history for a winger who also needs a new deal, and then hoping he signs mid-season, swaps one contract question for another with no gain in certainty.

The Lightning host the Red Wings tonight, and the Kucherov questions will follow the team into the building.
