The Edmonton Oilers are ready to make another run at the Cup in 2025, and according to top insiders, enlisting Patrick Kane may be a big boost for them.
This season started slow in Edmonton, but in recent times the Oilers are absolutely flying, with the team now poised to claim top spot in the Pacific Division for the first time in franchise history.
Despite their standing in the Western Conference, there's still some holes for this team to plug, with The Athletic recently linking them to three-time Stanley Cup winner Patrick Kane of the Detroit Red Wings.
In late January, I identified Brad Marchand as a quality target for the Oilers at the deadline. He's a veteran, has had success in the regular season and playoffs and might be available if the Boston Bruins slide out of the playoff race.
Patrick Kane is a similar player. The Athletic player card analysis by Dom Luszczyszyn and Shayna Goldman doesn't love him, but he's covering his $4 million contract and could spike as a member of the Oilers. It's well known that Edmonton already have one Kane in Evander, who will likely be back on the ice before the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin, and while Patrick has a different skillset, it's believed that they could compliment each other well down the stretch.
Apologies to NHL play-by-play broadcasters in advance, but the Edmonton Oilers might be wise to add a second Kane at the deadline.
Patrick Kane doesn't possess the skill set to replace the injured Evander Kane, Edmonton's power forward who has yet to play this season.
However, a healthy Evander and a procured Patrick could be key additions to Edmonton's forward depth chart at playoff time.
Here's why Patrick Kane might make sense for the Oilers. With the Red Wings also pushing hard for a Stanley Cup Playoffs spot, it's unclear if they'd want to part ways with a veteran leader, but if he's available, there's fewer targets that fit the Oilers better, especially given his post-season experience and the connection to GM Stan Bowman.
