While the NHL may be criticized for their salaries lacking compared to other major sports leagues, they are still paying players a significant salary, but once those players get paid, it's up to them what they do with that money. Some players set themselves up for life while others spend recklessly and ultimately end up in a bad spot after their careers are done, which has happened to many players over the years.
It's unclear what the situation is with former Montreal Canadiens enforcer Donald Brashear, but according to a recent Facebook post, he has begun a new job after his career ended 14 years ago.
The post welcomes Brashear as a new salesman to his local Nissan dealership, and while it may be a passion that allows him to continue thriving after his career ended, it's more than likely a need for him to continue earning money.
Over a 17 year career in the NHL, where he amassed a reported $16.3 million Brashear played in Montreal, Vancouver, Philadelphia, Washington and New York, and would ultimately go on to play 1,025 games, tallying a solid 205 points for a player who primarily found his spot due to his physicality. Unsurprisingly, over those 1,025 games, Brashear would face 2,634 penalty minutes, becoming a fan favourite wherever he went, but it hasn't served him well post-career.
In today's game, the salaries are much higher and allow players to set themselves up much better after their playing days are done, but with this latest update, we hope Brashear hasn't landed on too hard a time, and we hope he is doing well beyond his new role.
