Elliotte Friedman believes Sidney Crosby may be reconsidering his future with the Pittsburgh Penguins

On a recent episode of 32 Thoughts, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman believes the hold up with Crosby signing an extension is because he's unsure about his future.

The Sidney Crosby contract extension should be a milestone moment for him and the Pittsburgh Penguins as they work to hammer out a deal for their franchise star.

Sidney Crosby is now in the final reaches of his 12-year, $104.4 million contract, one that concludes after the 2024-25 season, and though he's been eligible to negotiate a new deal since July 1, 2024, no agreement has been reached just yet. Most figured the future Hall of Famer would sign a new long-term deal in relatively short order, but that hasn't happened.

According toElliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Sidney Crosby is taking a very measured approach, in large part because he wants some level of assurance that the Penguins can remain competitive in the coming years. Friedman indicated that the team has made Crosby several different contract offers of varying length, but he's in no rush to sign anything. With a season still remaining on his current contract, Crosby has the luxury of time to make his decision.

Elliotte Friedman speculated that Sidney Crosby's hesitation might be because he is wondering what chances the team has to go to the playoffs.

But for all that uncertainty, Friedman thinks Sidney Crosby will ultimately decide to remain with the Penguins.

Still, Sidney Crosby could well wait to see how the team fares this year before locking in a new long-term deal.

Approaching his 40s, Sidney Crosby is still extremely productive on the ice, finishing last season with 42 goals and 94 points while playing all 82 games.
