Ottawa Senators shockingly sign 38-year old former Toronto Maple Leaf who left the NHL in 2018
The Ottawa Senators have made some questionable moves and some good ones this off-season, and their latest PTO is an example of the former.
Back in 2006, the Toronto Maple Leafs drafted Nikolay Kulemin in the second-round, and the now 38-year old went on to play 669 games over 10 seasons with the Maple Leafs and the New York Islanders. However, his last game came in New York back in 2018, and he has since returned to the KHL where he averages a solid 16 points a season.
Now, the Ottawa Senators have shocked the NHL world by signing him to a PTO ahead of the 2024/25 season as they look to add depth to a forward group that struggled for consistency last year.
While the team isn't lacking stars, with the likes of Tim Stutzle, Brady Tkachuk, Claude Giroux, Shane Pinto and Drake Batherson all contributing, it's the lack of depth that's come back to haunt them.
This is after all a PTO however, so there's no guarantee that the 38-year old veteran will make the roster, but with the team looking for some depth, experience and leadership, he could certainly be an intriguing name to look for in the bottom six for Ottawa in 2024/25.
