Two teams confirmed as frontrunners to sign former Montreal Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty
It appears as though the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings remain the top two teams who could possibly sign Max Pacioretty shortly.
Left-wing Max Pacioretty remains an unrestricted free agent in search of a home and several teams have shown interest. Following missing time due to injuries in each of the past few seasons, he was ultimately limited to just 47 games with the Washington Capitals last season, with whom he inked a one-year, $2-million deal.
According to a tweet from TFP's David Pagnotta, it would seem the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings are zeroing in on Pacioretty. The Leafs have just over $1.275 million of cap space at the moment but can open another $1.1 million by moving defenseman Conor Timmins via trade or waivers down to the AHL.
The Red Wings have a massive $17.6 million in cap space but still need to sign key players in Lucas Raymond, Jonatan Berggren, and Mo Seider. Once those deals get done, their available cap space may shrink a lot.
It's not clear what type of deal Max Pacioretty is looking for, but it should be a one-year deal, likely tacked on with some performance bonuses based on games played, similar to his last deal with the Capitals.
The 35-year-old added 23 points, with four goals and 19 assists, in 47 games last season with Washington.
