Philadelphia Flyers general manager Daniel Briere is under fire for his comments on 2024 first-round draft pick Jett Luchanko.

The Philadelphia Flyers have been a struggling team for a few years now, having only one Stanley Cup Playoffs appearance in the last five years. The team has assured fans that it is dedicated to a real rebuild in order to help the team become more successful in the future. Last year, the Flyers doubled down on these assertions by announcing what they call "a new era of Orange."

"The Philadelphia Flyers organization was built on relentless ambition and loyalty to this city. When you're playing for Philadelphia, you're playing to win and you're giving it your all. That's the bottom line, because when you represent this city, nothing less is acceptable. That extends beyond the ice, too. It's about character, sacrifice, integrity, and most importantly, resilience in every single thing we do.

When you don the Orange and Black, you're held to a specific set of standards, and you're expected to show up and work your a** off. Every. Single. Day. It's about doing things the right way. No excuses. No shortcuts.

This is a new era of hockey, and we're building a new foundation for the future. New ways to work, new ways to train, and new ways to win. We have new voices, new perspectives, and new plans, but this is still Flyers hockey, so the goal remains the same: Win.

Welcome to a new era of Orange."

Despite criticism that nothing but the color was updated, the Flyers organization still believes they are putting things in all the right places. Among these is General Manager Daniel Brière, who recently came under fire for his comments about their latest first-round prospect, Jett Luchanko. The Philadephia GM shared his excitement at pulling the young center-forward at 13th overall ahead of Zeev Buium. Moreover, he made a comparison to the Montreal Canadiens forward Nick Suzuki, who he may hold in a little too high of regard.

"He reminds me a lot of Nick Suzuki. He's not the biggest, but he's very effective in all facets of the game. If he becomes half of Suzuki, we'll be happy. We were able to get a third-round pick that we were able to use to advance to the second round to draft defenseman Spencer Gill, from Rimouski, 59th overall, another one that our scouts had ranked in the first round. That gives us Luchanko and Gill rather than one player at No. 12."

With both players at the same height of 5'11" and a center-forward position, the comparison is not too beyond the pale. Yet, Nick Suzuki just posted his career-best season with 33 goals and 44 assists in 82 games. This is by no means a bad performance, but many fans agree that asking for only half that level of production from an early first-round draft pick is keeping the bar a little too low.

Jett Luchanko is still just 18 years old, with Nick Suzuki 7 years his senior. If the recent Philadelphia draft pick only posts half of what the Habs forward may become capable of, they may be in trouble in the future. Yet, with underselling comments like this from GM Daniel Brière, the Flyers need another newer era of Orange anyway.
