Oilers reportedly made an offer for top available trade target before deadline
It's already been two days since the NHL's trade deadline passed and we're slowly starting to hear about teams that may have had interest or made an offer for a player, but never acquired him.
During the '32 Thoughts' segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Edmonton Oilers made an offer to the San Jose Sharks for Timo Meier before he was eventually dealt to the New Jersey Devils.
Friedman went on to say that the Oilers were looking at it from the standpoint of him being there for the rest of the season and playoffs, before dealing with his contract in the summer, if they decided to keep the pending RFA forward.
"I think everyone wonders what didn't happen that was talked about or might have happened and to me, one of the more fascinating things was the Edmonton Oilers made a legitimate pitch for Timo Meier. Obviously it didn't happen, he was traded to the New Jersey Devils. But the Oilers did take a long look and from what I understand, they made an offer." Friedman said.
He added, "They were looking at it like, we'll bring him in and we'll figure out everything in the summer, after the season. But they wanted him for the playoffs. I thought it was a really interesting idea. I think Calgary looked at it too, but they were more interested in him if they could sign him, which Meier obviously hasn't done. But Edmonton was willing to do it and just let things play out down the road."

Meier, 26, has yet to play with the Devils due to an upper-body injury, but was cleared for contact on Friday. It's unclear if he'll make his Devils debut on Sunday night against the Arizona Coyotes.
