Insider says Habs GM stuck with this player because no one wants him

There's no question the Montreal Canadiens are sellers at the trade deadline, if they do anything at all. The team will finish at or near the bottom of the league in 2022-23 as it continues its rebuild after firing previous general manager Marc Bergevin. According to one Insider, one of the contracts that was signed under Bergevin will be very difficult for the Habs to move as there is simply no market for the player.

While appearing on TSN 690 Radio Wednesday, Darren Dreger said there is little hope that Montreal will move forward Mike Hoffman at the trade deadline as no one is showing any interest in him.

"The phones aren't even lukewarm on him," said Dreger.

If Hoffman was set to become a free agent at the end of this season, there might be more hope. However, he has another year let on his contract after this one at a cap hit of $4.5 million. After six straight seasons of 20 goals or more (including one with 32), Hoffman has fallen off the last couple of years and currently sits with 9 in 43 games. He has a great shot, which has served him well over his career, but that seems to be about all he brings to the table. When he isn't scoring, there's little to no upside. This is one contract the Habs may have to ride out, as much as Hughes would likely prefer not to.
