The Washington Capitals are in an interesting position as we're only nine days away from the NHL's trade deadline. They currently sit two points back of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference and it's not clear as of yet on how they'll approach the deadline, by making some minor additions or selling off their pending unrestricted free agents.
According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, teams have begun to receive calls on defenceman Dmitry Orlov, who's set to become a UFA on July 1st and currently has a cap hit of $3.3 million.
"Well, this is a potentially significant development because Orlov's name has started to emerge in trade chatter," Johnston said on Insider Trading Tuesday. "And I think there's a couple reasons for this. The one that you key on there, the fact they're sputtering a bit in Washington. Teams are calling general manager Brian MacLellan to see what he's going to do with his unrestricted free agents. There's also the fact that the Capitals have been negotiating with Orlov. And I was told by a well-placed source on Tuesday that those talks are nowhere right now. There's no progress towards a deal." LeBrun said.
He added, "And so I don't think the Capitals have given up on signing Orlov. I don't think they've committed to being full-on sellers, but if they get either a strong offer right now, or he's unsigned at the end of next week, I think they have a very interesting decision on Orlov."
Orlov, 31, was drafted by the Capitals in the second round in 2009 and came over from Russia to play in North America in 2011. The Novokuznetsk native has appeared in 686 career games, putting up 256 points (60 goals, 196 assists) and 279 penalty minutes. He helped the Capitals win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history in 2018, recording eight points during that run.
It's still a little too early to tell what the Capitals will do with Orlov, but if he does become available, there will be several contending teams that'll be looking to acquire his services before 3 p.m. ET on March 3rd. Team's that miss out on Vladislav Gavrikov and/or Jakob Chychrun could shift their focus to Orlov.
