The NHL's expansion team, which will begin play in the 2021-22 season, will not have a team name as soon as first expected.

According to the team's CEO, Tod Leiweke, plans to announce a name have been put off indefinitely and may no longer happen until fall as work continues on “a myriad of issues” in regards to trademarking. The team, however, has begun the initial design work on both logos and uniforms that work with a variety of different names.

“If you do just one (name), then you've left yourself hostage to any sort of challenge,” Leiweke said. “So we've had to do multiple (trade)marks, and that's about where we are.”

He added that with everything going on in the world right now, mainly the pandemic and police-brutality protests, that the team will likely hold off on any major announcements in the near future.

“It's not the right time,” Leiweke said. “Vegas did it a year out. We've got ample time, and the thing this organization will never be is tone deaf. So we've got to pick the right time, and we've got to make sure all of our ducks are in a row.”
