The heads of five sports leagues operating in Canada, including the National Hockey League, have come together to call on the Canadian government to allow single-event sports betting as quickly as possible. The others involved are Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Soccer (MLS), and the Canadian Football League (CFL). '

"Sports betting gives fans another exciting way to engage with the sports they love. Because a legal and regulated sports betting market in Canada would be beneficial to sports and their fans, we urge prompt action to make this a reality," the leagues said in a letter sent to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Finance Minister Bill Morneau and Attorney General of Canada and Justice Minister Dave Lametti.

“Sports betting already happens illegally in Canada; creating a legal framework would shift consumers from illicit, unregulated markets to a legal and safe marketplace. Regulating single-game betting would allow for strong consumer protections as well as safeguards to further protect the integrity of sports.”

Signing the June 8th statement were the NBA's Adam Silver, NHL's Gary Bettman, MLB's Rob Manfred, Major League Soccer's Don Garber and the CFL's Randy Ambrosie. It asks for "prompt action" in making the betting a reality.

It was revealed back in August of 2019 that the NHL would start allowing betting kiosks inside hockey arenas sometime during the 2019-20 season. It wants to have them in all arenas over the next couple of years.
