Professional hockey players form alliance to combat racism in the NHL
Following the aftermath of protest that ensued in light of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minnesota Police, many athletes have stepped up to speak out against racism. Among those to speak out and seek change, Evander Kane and Akim Aliu.
As they continue to seek change and aspire to eradicate racism, the two NHL level athletes have joined forces, effectively creating the Hockey Diversity Alliance.
Kane and Aliu are joined by other NHL athletes, with the executive board featuring names such as Trevor Daley, Matt Dumba, Wayne Simmonds, Chris Stewart and Joel Ward.
Though the alliance will operate separately from the National Hockey League, the goal is to work closely with the league to face and correct the racially based issues surrounding the sport. At this time, the alliance has announced that membership is open to anyone who shares the same goals and intent.
