After seeing only 13 games of NHL action, 26-year-old defenseman Joel Persson is leaving the league and heading back to Sweden.

According to Aftonbladet, Persson has signed a three-year deal to return to the Vaxjo Lakers, a team for which he excelled before coming to the NHL. In the 2017-18 season, his first at the top level of Swedish hockey, Persson tallied 6 goals and 28 assists with +17 rating in 51 for Vaxjo, as the team won the Le mat Trophy (Swedish Championship). This got him noticed by the Oilers who signed him to a contract but left him at Vaxjo for one more season on a loan. After putting up another 6 goals and 25 assists, Persson started the 2019-20 season in North America. He picked up his only two NHL points (both assists) in an early November game against the Devils. After being sent down to the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL, Persson was traded to the Anaheim Ducks for Angus Redmond and a conditional 7th round pick in 2022. He finished the season with the Ducks AHL affiliate San Diego Gulls.
