Former Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Lasse Kukkonen announced his retirement from professional hockey, on Monday.

Kukkonen, 38, last appeared in the NHL during the 2008-09 season with the Philadelphia Flyers. The former Blackhawks draft pick went on to play 159 regular season NHL games, posting six goals and 22 points. He also played in an additional 14 playoff games, putting up two assists. Though his NHL career wasn't very memorable, he went on to have a great career in Europe, spending time in the KHL, SHL, and most recently the SM-liiga.

Kukkonen was able to play professional hockey for 20 seasons, a very rare feat in today's game. He was also able to play for Finland in the 2018 Winter Olympics, and had the honour of being named team captain.
